Every week, we will feature some of our remarkable interns who have been placed in organizations by the Stutern platform.
Our Stutern for this week is Davis Uche, a graphic designer, artist and DJ who is well versed in graphic design packages as well as computer programs.
1. What school are you in or did you finish from? Course of study?
I finished from “Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka” where I studied “Building”.
2. What organization are you currently interning with and what is your job description?
I am currently interning at Nairabox and my job description is Graphic Artist, Designer and Illustrator.
3. Why did you decide to take on this internship and what were your expectations?
To be honest, I decided to take on this internship because I wanted to get off my back and into the world, (basically out of home) and also because I wanted a job that I was really interested in. My expectations were to work in an environment where I would get to grow/develop professionally, interact and also have some fun while at it.
4. Has the internship met up with your expectations?
Well, so far so good, the internship has met with my expectations, I’m working with a group of great young people who inspire, motivate and encourage me in my work and creations. Plus, they are fun to hang out with
5. What is the weirdest or most interesting thing that has happened since you started?
I don’t know about weird but the most interesting thing that has happened to me since I started and even during my interview was the fact that my bosses (The C.E.O. particularly) believe so much in my work and what I can do, even I find it hard to believe that much but they do and they always give me that push I need to get better and better. Although sometimes, it feels like a lot of weight trying not to let them down its quite fascinating how someone could believe so much in you, more than you yourself.
6. How has the internship changed you or your mindset so far?
The Internship has changed my mindset in some ways, one being that I’ve been exposed to people who can and have influenced me positively, letting me know that I am and can be so much more than I perceive myself and my abilities to design and create.
7. Tell us something interesting or weird about yourself.
Hmm, interesting or weird… Well I for one am actually really terrible with meeting and relating with new people, (the opposite sex more often) its a struggle starting a conversation with new people and my small-talk skills is no good in helping that. I honestly wonder how I have survived a month working here and there are still a few quirks in my relationship with some colleagues here at Nairabox HQ.
8. Are there any tips you would love to give to prospective interns?
Tips Tips Tips… Well, love what you do, if you don’t, you won’t succeed there. I mean, look at my course of study and my current job description. And for those like me who are jacks of almost every trade, please try and settle for one; if not forever but for a while, see how much you can grow in it. Later you can pick up the rest as hobbies or part time. I’m currently in that position and can’t wait to get back to the rest of me, because honestly that’s what they are.. A part of me.
