Graduating from the university is usually an experience trailed with a lot of excitement and trepidation towards the future. This is mostly because when you consider the situation in the country and how everyone seems to hit you with the “there are no jobs in Nigeria” cliché every chance they get, your stomach turns at the thought of job-hunting.
Regardless of these challenges, you will find that certain people still manage to get jobs with no prior “connections” as is the norm in this part of the world. You may find yourself wondering if they have more luck than you do, they don’t; or if they have two heads like our Nigerian parents are so fond of asking, they don’t.
We have put together a few tips to help you get your foot in the door to a successful career.
- Join Stutern
I mean, this goes without saying but we couldn’t help it.
If you do not have an account already, do sign up with us for the best internship opportunities to help you kick-start your career.
- Leverage your social media
We have successfully reached the point where a career opportunity might just be a tweet away. Follow people with wide experience in your field of interest and people with great industry influence.
Engage in conversations with people with similar career goals or generally people who will add value to you in one way or another instead of participating in Island vs Mainland wars.
Join professional groups on social media, keep yourself up to date with LinkedIn. Make sure you are following and constantly checking up on the social media pages of possible employers or companies. Do not underestimate the power of social media and the information that comes with it.
- Tailor your credentials accordingly
Make sure to keep your resume and cover letter tailored to the job descriptions you apply for as opposed to using the “anyone goes” system.
Remember that employers or hiring managers are always looking for certain keywords or skillsets and you should therefore emphasize on whichever ones you have that will make you the most fitting candidate.
- Make the Internet Your Best Resource
In addition to leveraging your social media, you should not forget to make use of online learning opportunities; take courses on Coursera, Edx, Udemi, Udacity, MIT OCW and the rest.
There are thousands of learning opportunities waiting to help you grow if you’re willing to find them. Certifications from these courses will also be an added bonus on your resume as they show you off as an individual constantly looking to grow and learn.
You do not need to own a television to be constantly updated with news anymore. Get updated news on your industry; what companies are the best to work with, what new trends or tools are on the rise and how you can get yourself better acquainted with them, all of which will definitely give you an edge over other fellow job seekers.
The journey from zero to hero as a fresh graduate is a scary one but with the right skillset and information, you will find yourself climbing up the career ladder.
